Dr. R. Balasubramanian Director, Science And Humanities, SRM Institute of Science and Technology

A distinguished academician and administrator for over four decades, Dr. R. Balasubramanian 

has a B.A. in Political Science and an M.A. in Politics and Public Administration from the Presidency College of Chennai, one of the oldest and prestigious institutions of higher education in India. He joined the Department of Politics and Public Administration, University of Madras in 1969 as a Research Scholar and was an invited participant in 1972 for an international seminar by the University of Belgrade, Yugoslavia. After completing his M.Litt in 1975, he obtained his Ph.D in 1979 from the University of Madras.

An Assistant Professor of Political Science in 1972 at the Presidency College, a Reader in 1980 in the Department of Politics and Public Administration in the University of Madras, he became Professor and Head of the Department in 1988. He was a visiting faculty of Cleveland State University, USA.

Dr.R. Balasubramanian has 35 years of teaching experience, including 33 years of teaching at postgraduate level and more than 30 years of research experience guiding M.Phil and Ph.D Scholars. Sixty scholars earned their M.Phil degrees and  twenty five scholars  obtained  Ph.D under his supervision.  He is currently supervising Ph.D research scholars and has evaluated more than 100 Ph.D. dissertations of various universities in India and overseas.

A member of the Syndicate of the University of Madras for nine years, Dr. Balasubramanian has served in assessment panels of the UGC, AICTE and MHRD besides being nominated by state and central governments to be a member in committees of higher education. A former President of the Indian Political Science Association and Indian Public Administration Association, Dr. Balasubramanian was Chairperson of a Round Table in the International Political Science Congress.

For more than a decade Dr. Balasubramanian has been the Director of the Faculty of Science and Humanities, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, overseeing the functioning of 15 major departments that have about 400 teaching and non-teaching staff and around 4500 students in under-graduate and post graduate programs.
