Program Modules

In the first semester, students learn the foundation and core courses, ranging from Introduction to Journalism, Reporting and Editing, Media Ethics, Current Affairs, Polity and Governance in India, Ideologies and World Political Systems.

In the second semester courses are carefully curated in Print, Broadcast and Digital Journalism tailored to the requirements of the industry. Internships, field trips and a dissertation designed to fine tune interests of individuals.

Teaching Methods and Tools

With only limited number of students the Center follows need based module of tutoring and mentoring. The idea is to create a broader panoramic view of the field, exposing them to the various aspects of the industry.

The Multi media lab, Editing suite, Recording and photography studio in the premises are accessible to the students of SCJ for practical experience.

Periodical lectures and practical classes provided by outside academic experts and practicing journalists from leading media organizations.

COURSE SYNOPSIS

Introduction to Communication

To understand the principles of communication theory ; different theories in Communication and media, the significance of media.Identifying the strengths and weaknesses of language in our communication, learn skills and techniques essential to effective communication, develop an awareness and the ability to recognize propaganda.

Essentials of Reporting

To introduce students to skill of writing for media; specialized reporting skills and reporting analysis. The students, at the end of the course, will be able to evaluate newsworthiness of information, demonstrate an understanding of story idea creation.Comprehend the basic structure and format of a news story (lead, body, and conclusion).Demonstrate an understanding of beat reporting and feature writing.

Media Writing

The practical course would acquaint students with advanced journalism and writing for media practices. Make the students understand about news values, representation of news-views and ethical issues associated with it, offers proper understanding about the writing skills and its techniques for different mass media. Helps to learn the importance of writing skills and various styles for different mass media. Inculcate the habit of remaining informed and knowledgeable about current and contemporary affairs.

Polity and Governance in India

To develop deep understanding of the Indian Constitution and to know the working of the constitution since independence in detail. Familiarise with the Political Institutions of Central and State governments and its relationship with each other. Appreciate the development of the constitution as an evolutionary process and recognize the importance given to an independent judiciary. Get clarity of the law-making process in our country by the legislative branch of our government.

Ideologies and World Political Systems

Where do nation-states come from?To get an Understanding of the basic features of ideologies, draw an appropriate comparative analysis of different political systems. Coming to terms with and analysing the organs of the state, salient historical and political features of other states, recognize the different political systems across the globe.

Media Ethics

Helps to integrate ethical foundations and apply those ideas to professional situations,compare ethical standards of mass communication professions and examine how similarities and differences help or hinder professional relationships. Develop, defend, and apply a set of guidelines to tackle ethical situations. Helps to look closely at the real-world conditions under which journalism is practiced; to identify how they shape moral choice and understand how today’s news values guide--or fail to guide--journalists in recognizing civic needs they should serve.

Current Affairs

To understand the importance of people, events, and issues in the news, examine current and emerging issues and trends that impact the society. Analyse and discuss current issues and trends in society. Reflect on personal beliefs and professional practice in select issues and trends. Design and develop action plans to address issues and trends in the society.

Print Journalism

Page Designing and Layout Making

Practical classes to familiarize the techniques of magazine design and production. Do photo selection, write titles and outlines, design pages and cover selection. Emphasize on words and visuals. Receive hands-on experience in desktop publishing and in working as part of a creative team.

Feature writing

Understand the inner workings of magazine publishing. Understand the roles of feature sections. Think critically, independently and creatively about issues, events, theories and trends. Demonstrate refined reporting, writing, storytelling, research and multimedia skills. Practice to write feature articles of various lengths and know how to tailor them. Learn how to package stories, taking into account text, visual treatments and interactivity formultimedia platforms. Develop and manage specialty areas or beats, and cultivate a range of sources. Achieve publication as a freelance writer.

Investigative Reporting

Think critically about what investigative journalism is and grasp the mechanics of investigative stories. Helps to develop and hone investigative techniques, examine “neglected” or “under reported” stories. understanding of and competence identifying investigative stories.

Minor Project/ Field Trip/ Dissertation

Give the students an opportunity to produce content in a format of their choice. Help students to work together as a team. Gain practical experience regarding their area chosen for specialization and develop a greater understanding about career options while more clearly defining personal career goals. The practical component of this is in a field trip arranged for groups of students pertaining to their areas of interest or inquisitives. Those students interested in pursuing higher studies may opt for dissertation with the approval of the course instructor.

Broadcast Journalism

Fundamentals of Video Editing

Practical classes to demonstrate competency in technical aspects of productions.Interpret video footage for selective editing (storytelling) and produce videos in a professional manner.

Audio Journalism

Search and develop sources, pitch story ideas, produce a news bulletin and develop the students’ voices for presentation and reporting style. Learn modulation techniques and develop voice for radio. To understand the mechanism of studio recording and promotional techniques for a radio station.

Television Journalism and Documentary Making

Equip to gain hands on experience in television journalism and documentary production. To work as field reporters covering a range of situations and scenarios.Develop necessary skill sets for television news reporting. To produce television news packages and documentaries on relevant issues.

Blogging and Journalism

Discuss blogging and help students create blogs, Give students insights into the working of Twitter. Provide insights into live blogging, learn to write blog posts, news reports based on tweets and Create content for live blogs.

Data and Visualisation

Methods to study datasets and locate interesting story angles Expose students to data sources on the net. Find ways of transforming data into information that can be easily understood. Create news reports and graphics based on data analysis.

Social Media Journalism

Inform students about the impact of social media on information flow. Discuss the working of Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and Instagram. Explain how Facebook’s Newsfeed works. Train on how to critique LinkedIn company pages.

Photo Journalism

Develop the ability of the learner to bring life into the story through photographs and understand the use of camera and images to drive interest in stories. Teaches the aesthetic and technical sense of photography including visual storytelling skills.

Sports Journalism

Introduces the concepts of sports journalism and how to cover the activities and roles of various national, regional and international sports governing, regulatory and players’ bodies. Relate to the basics of sports policymaking in India and internationally, focus on sports reporting in India and internationally.

Business Journalism

To understand the need and relevance of financial reporting, how macroeconomic policymaking happens in India and how is it reported and understand the need for corporate and equity reporting.

  • SRM Center of Journalism (SCJ) places a premium on language and communication skills. The medium of instruction is English.

Note: In case of a practicing journalist, a break post his / her graduation is accepted
