Research will bring countries together: Argentine Envoy

"Women after their education get disconnected from research and they need hand-holding," said the president of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore, Prof. Giridhar U. Kulkarni, chief guest at the Research Day event held at SRM Institution of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur.

He emphasized on how women should be encouraged to stay in the path of research. "Education involves formal study, defined path, and skill development. Learning has to be done full time, it involves sources and types and interactions and enhanced creativity."

He also urged researchers to be updated on the recent events. "You need to be technically ready. Your inventions should not be killed but must be amplified. But the path towards this is difficult and undefined."

In his welcome address, Director (Research) Prof. K. Ramasamy said that it is time for researchers to sharpen their skills to the highest level. Joint Director Research, Dr. SRS Prabaharan presented a detailed report on the research developments in the Institution and how SRMIST has developed in terms of paper submission, h-index, Impact factor and so on.

In his keynote address, His Excellency Daniel Chuburu, Ambassador of the Argentine Republic to India said, “India and Argentina are working on different aspects and education is one among them. This collaboration will help to strengthen the relationship between the countries. These are welcomed by both governments.”

On developing the research relationship he said, “One of the aspects that we are working together is education. We are looking forward to establishing a centre that will facilitate the transfer of technology to equip labs and transfer of knowledge, including the exchange of experts and development of training courses. We can also look at how we can promote the exchange of students and faculty, areas that can facilitate research.”

Vice-Chancellor of SRMIST, Dr. Sandeep Sancheti said, “Such events will sow the seeds for future developments. This is like a test match for us and we will see the benefits in the long run. We also need to induce a model to include more women Ph.D. scholars as they face several hindrances in doing research. We should also find ways to increase their participation.”

Pro-Chancellor (Academics), Dr. P. Sathyanarayanan said that the Institution still has a long way to go in terms of research development. “In the new education policy, there are three classes – Research University, Research and Teaching University, and Teaching Affiliated University. Therefore research is not just associated with PG students and Ph.D. Scholar, it should also be done at the Under Graduate level. Students should be kindled to do entrepreneurship.”

Dr. P. Sathyanarayanan unveiled the website of Central Research Facility (CRF). A CD of abstracts was also released on the occasion.  The best paper award for Nature, Nature Communication was presented. The recipients of the SPARC research grant by MHRD were also recognized at the event.
