Workshop on Differential Equations and its Applications - WDEA 2019
Differential Equations are absolutely fundamental to modern science and engineering. Differential equations have a remarkable ability to predict the world around us. They are used in a wide variety of disciplines from biology, economics, physics, chemistry and engineering. They play an important role in modeling virtually every physical, technical, or biological process, from celestial motion, to bridge design, to interactions between neurons etc.
Department of Mathematics, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram organized one day workshop on “Differential Equations and Its Applications” on 7th March, 2019. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together experts and young researchers and provide a common platform for discussion on recent advances and developments in Differential Equations and its Applications. More than 50 participants from various institutions participated in this workshop.
The workshop commenced at 9.30 AM with the inaugural function, with invocation and lighting of kuthuvilakku. Dr. Shakeela Sathish, Head, Department of Mathematics and Convener of the workshop welcomed the gathering and emphasized about the workshop. Dr. R. Sahadevan, Former Director, Ramanujan Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics in his inaugural address, said that Mathematics is the language of Nature and is complicated and unpredictable. Any continuous process can be mathematically modeled in terms of equations and the governing equations are differential equations. Also he congratulated the Department of Mathematics for organizing such workshop to convey the importance of Mathematics. Vice Principal (Academic) felicitated the gathering. He emphasized the importance of applications of Mathematics and said that Engineering field cannot stand alone without Mathematics.
The first invited lecture of the day was given by Dr. R. Sahadevan, in “Analytic Methods to solve Non Linear Partial Differential Equations”. In his lecture he explained about the dynamical systems with examples. Classification of dynamical system, Non- linear Partial Differential Equations and the methods of solving them were elucidated. Hirota’s Bilinear method, Bilinear method to Burgers equation, Bilinearisation of Korteweg – de Vries equation were discussed.
The second invited lecture was given by Dr. L. Jones Tarcius Doss, Professor, Department of Mathematics, Anna University, Chennai on “Mixed Galerkin Finite Element Methods for Kuramoto- Sivashinsky Equation. Difference between Riemann and Lebesgue integrable functions was explained. Sobolev space, Two point boundary value problem with strong, weak and classical solutions were discussed. Spline function space, Numerical method for Partial Differential Equations, Galerkin method were interpreted.
The next invited lecture was given by Dr. S.R. Manam, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, IIT Madras on “Connections between potentials associated with water wave scattering’’. Scattering phenomenon in water waves and mathematical formulation of the same where linearised. Diffraction by a gap in a breakwater , connection between the potentials impermeable partial barriers in deep water problem, wave scattering by porous barriers, scattering by submerged porous barrier were elucidated.
The next invited lecture was given by Dr. Nachiketa Mishra, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, IITDM, Kancheepuram on “Homogenization and Multiscale Modelling , approaches and challenges’’. Mathematical formulation of Heterogeneity, Homogenization of one space dimension, Cell problem and variational form, projection operator, Galerkin Approximations, Conjugate Gradient method were interpreted. Mr. R. Srinivasan, Coordinator, proposed the vote of thanks. The workshop was a great success with Faculty members from various institutions benefited through enriching lectures of the invited speakers.
