SRM Students Win the Debate Competition

Perithinum Perithu kel is an intercollegiate debate competition in Star Vijay TV, a popular television channel in Tamil Nadu. The programme provides a platform for the students to debate on critical issues and to create a youth forum in Tamilnadu. This show is directed and produced by Anthony Tirunelveli who is also the Director and Producer of Neeya Naana, a popular talk show in Star Vijay TV.

SRMU Students with the Trophy The debate held between Satyabhama University and SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) on the topic, ' Which should be the priority, Development or Environment?' on December 10, 2011. The panelists of the show were Rama Subramanian, Muthukrishnan, Badri, Sultan Ismail and R.R. Srinivasan. Selvaprakash, Mohan, Manoj Kumar and Priyadarshini represented SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University).

Satyabhama University students argued that in many cases environment needs to be compromised because development is indispensable for a developing country like India. SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) team opined that environment is as crucial as the development and it has to be nurtured because it influences everything in this world.

Selvaprakash, Final year student of the School of Architecture, the caption of the team, said that the globalization, liberalization, industrialization, urbanization exploit the environment to the maximum. Satyapriya, student, Satyabhama University put forth a comment that change is constant. Responding to her argument Naveena, first year, BCA student of SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) commented that the essential element for the livelihood is food and not development.

Mohan, third year Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering student mentioned the ill effects of the pesticides and the synthetic fertilizers being used and he said organic manure is a better alternative which would not harm the soil.

SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) team was declared as winners by the panelists. The relevant arguments and the spontaneity of the students led to the success of the team.
