The 17th Annual Convocation of SRM Institute of Science & Technology was held in a dual-mode. Rank Holders and Ph.D. degree awardees were given their degrees in person at Dr. T.P. Ganesan Auditorium, Main Campus, Kattankulathur. About 15,154 students belonging to the Faculties of Engineering and Technology, Faculty of Science and Humanities, Medicine & Health Science and Management studies including 176 Ph.D. scholars received their degrees in various disciplines. 256 students were awarded medals for having secured First, Second, and the Third rank in their courses.

“Quality education will lead to massive transform”, said the chief guest Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Education and Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India. “To suit this, our education sector is developing and changing to meet the demand. This is done through the New Education Policy 2020.”

He urged students to take up entrepreneurship as it will help create a livelihood for people. “Think about the problems that are in your area of study and come up with technological solutions. This will lead to the holistic growth of our society,” he said.

In his convocation address, Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said, “The Institution has given you knowledge, now you must work hard and make your institution proud.”

He reminded students of APJ Abdul Kamal words ‘Dream, Dream, Dream’ and said, “Follow the words of our former President and work hard to make all your dreams a reality.”

He elaborated on how DRDO has developed its own sonic missiles, battle tanks among other things. “Lots of innovation and technological development will make our country self-reliant.”  He urged youngsters to innovative new technologies and be the drive to make this change.

“The basis of all research starts at academic institutions. So the aim of education should be to hence manpower with skills and carry out core research - in basic and applied. Today we have more than 50,000 start-ups attached to various government organizations. Most of these start-ups have come up from incubation centers in academic institutions. Our government gives lots of support and opportunity in terms of funds and tie-ups.”

In his concluding remark, he said, “Come up with disruptive ideas, technology, and innovation to make our country and your institution proud.”

Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar, Founder Chancellor of SRM Institute of Science & Technology and Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha preside over the convocation and presented the medals to winners.

Endowment award in the name of Tmt Pachimmal Palanimuthu for the best outgoing MBBS student in the final year and Tmt Swarnam & Dr. Krishnamoorthy Endowment Award for the best overall outgoing student of SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Center was awarded to Mr. Aditya NR for topping among all students in the final year and in the overall duration of the course in MBBS program.

The Annual report was presented by Vice Chancellor of SRMIST, Dr. C. Muthamizhchelvan. The Convocation was held in the presence of SRMIST’s Pro Chancellor (Academic) Dr. P. Sathyanarayanan, Pro Vice Chancellor (Medical & Health Sciences) Dr. Lt. Col A. Ravikumar and Registrar Dr. S. Ponnusamy.

SRM Tamil Peraayam awards 2021 presented to noted pulavargal


SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Kattankulathur presented awards and honours to the winners of the SRM Tamil Peraayam Awards 2021 (Thamizh Academy Awards) at the celebration held at the Institute’s premises. The event was presided over by the Founder Chancellor of SRM Group of Institution and the Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar, National Award-winning lyricist Vairamuthu and Kundrakudi Ponnambala Adigalar.

Present on the occasion were SRMIST’s Pro Chancellor (Administration) Mr. Ravi Pachamoothoo, President Mr. S. Niranjan, Vice Chancellor Dr. C. Muthamizhchelvan, Registrar Dr. S. Ponnusamy, Tamil Peraayam President Mr. Karu Nagarajan among others.

Speaking on how SRMIST has been hosting Tamil Peraayam Awards each year, Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar said, "These awards have always been stepping stones to bigger awards, the like Sahitya Akademi Award."

Addressing students he said that such awards should motivate them to take up Tamil learning and teach others as well. He insisted that students should be proud of their mother tongue and take efforts to patronize it. In his concluding remark, he said, "These awards will be given each year to encourage many more to promote the language all over the world.”

Urging students to give more time for literature Mr. Ravi Pachamoothoo said, “Students always need to be enthusiastic when coming to studying Tamil. Studying gives us knowledge but literature allows us to think.”

“Students need to learn from Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar”, said lyricist Vairamuthu. Addressing students he said that it is very important for each one of them to leave a mark in this world through literature and education.

He too urged students to become patrons of Tamil and use technology to take it all around the world. “The only way we can promote Tamil is through the students. It is also important not to have low self-esteem or high self-esteem as both will lead to the destruction of oneself,” he advised students.

“Recognizing the right person at the right time is the biggest honour,” said Kundrakudi Ponnambala Adigalar. “Always make the best use of time when you’re alive. Education should not just give you knowledge but help you learn to love and have humanity.

He cited examples from Tamil history on how poet Bharathiyar and V O Chidambaram uplifted the morals of the language. In his concluding remark, he said, “Honouring one’s mother is the highest honour in Tamil.”

At the Tamil Perayaam Award ceremony India Post released SRM stamps and handed it over to Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar.

The winners were awarded for their best contribution towards the Tamil language, literature, & culture for 2021. The awardees and prize money are as follows:

- Pudhumaippithan Padaippilakkiya Virudhu (Short Story, Novel, Drama) of Rs. 1 Lakh was shared between Kengapuram A Venila and Sruthi from Muthunadu.

- Bharathiyar Kavithai Virudhu of Rs. 1 Lakh was Kurunjippookal Kadavoor Manimaran

- Aazha Valliappa Kuzhanthai Ilakkiya Virudhu (Rs. 1 Lakh) was given to Malayar Manipadalgal book Vettriselvan

- G.U. Pope Translation Award (Translation from Tamil) of Rs. 1 Lakh was given to Dr. Palani Arangasami

- Pai. Na. Appuswamy Aaruviyal Tamil Virudhu/A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technology Award (Science / Technology in Tamil) – Rs. 1 Lakh was given to V. Dilli Babu

- Muthutthandavar Thamizhisai Virudhu (Book on Sculpture / Pictograph (Painting), Tamil Music – Rs. 1 Lakh was presented to TKS Kalaivanan

- Parithimar Kalaingnar Thamizh Aivaringnar Virudhu (Research Book on Tamil) – Rs. 1 Lakh was given to C. Mahendran
- Muthamizh Arignar Kalaignar Social Justice award – Rs. 1. Lakh was presented to C. Mageshwaran

- Sudesamithiran Thamizh Idhazh Virudhu (Tamil Arts, Literature and Cultural Journal) – Rs. 50,000/- goes to M Poongundran

- Tholkappiyar Thamizh Sangam Virudhu (Rs.50,000) is awarded to Manimegalai Mandram from Rajapalayam

- Arunachalakkavirayar Virudhu (Tamil music / Folklore Troupe) of Rs. 50,000/- was given to Thirupuvanam Athmanathan

- Paarivendhar Painthamizh Virudhu (Lifetime Achievement Award) – Rs. 3 Lakhs was presented to Dr. P. Valanarasu.


SRM honours Chef Damodaran with Life Time Excellence Award on International Chef’s Day


International Chef's Day 2021 celebrated at SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Kattankulathur had live food demonstrations. The theme for this year’s event was ‘Healthy food for the future’.

Organised by SRM Institute of Hotel Management (SRMIHM) and South India Chef's Association, chief guest Chef Dr. K. Damodaran, SICA- President, Celebrity Chef, Guinness World Record Holder held an interactive session with students. He shared his work experience and love for cooking healthy meals which demonstrating on how to do the tradition meen kolumbu.

“Chefs are the backbone of the food industry,” he said. He also urged senior chefs to pass down their skills and knowledge to the youngsters so that the latter may have the opportunity to get creative and innovate newer meals. “Traditional food has a lot of healthy optional medicinal values. This will help in beating COVID.”

Chef Damodaran was honoured with the Life Time Excellence Award by SRMIHM.  Guest of honour, Chef N. Sheetharam Prasad, General Secretary - IFCA, Culinary Director, GRT Hotels & Resorts was honoured with the Service Excellence Award. The Vocational Excellence Award was presented to Chef Dr. M. Thirulogachander.

In his speech Sheetharam Prasad said, “Students need to do a lot of research to develop good healthy eating habits.” He urged all the upcoming chefs to practice cooking and eating local food.

SRMIHM also honoured 19 chefs from all over India who had participated in this mega event. Chef Zubin Writer, Executive Sous Chef at ITC grand Chola also held a live demonstration for students.

The fruit mixing ceremony was held during the event in which all the guests and chefs took part. The event concluded with cultural performance and prize distribution ceremony.

Also present for the event was SRMIST Registrar Dr. S. Ponnusamy, Director (Hotel Management) Dr D Antony Ashok Kumar, Vice-principal SRM IHM Lalitha Shri among others.


SRM and Mahindra sign MoU for research collaboration


The Department of Automobile Engineering under the School of Mechanical Engineering at SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Kattankulathur has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mahindra and Mahindra, Mahindra Research Valley, Mahindra World City, Chennai.

The key highlights of this MoU are, FIIP - Faculty Industry Immersion Program for SRMIST Faculty members; usage of SRM – BRIN Centre, Centre of Excellence in Automation Technologies on  “Hydraulics & Pneumatics Technologies”, Mechatronics and Wind Tunnel facility for M&M’s Mahindra Research Valley (“MRV”) engineers and experimental study; MRV experts to deliver guest lectures to SRM Students and SRM Faculties to deliver trainings to MRV engineers, in turn, based on need; M&M to offer internship to SRM Students, at MRV, without any payments; Submission of joint R&D proposals to Government; Industry visit for SRM students at MRV; and any other collaborations as the parties may mutually agree on from time to time.

Mahindra and Mahindra was represented by Dr. Shankar M Venugopal Vice  President, Mr. Sitaraman Ram Mohan Head - Intellectual Property Department, Mr. Ashutosh Joshi Head - Knowledge Resource Centre, Mr. C. Subash Head - Farm Technology Capability Building, MTA.

Dr. Shankar M Venugopal elaborated the broad areas of research done at the valley. The long term technological development that can be got from the education sector and so on.


CVRDE chief address students on technology advancement in defence


SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Kattankulathur organised a special lecture program and expo as part of the 75th Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav in association with Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE) - Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Dr V. Balamurugan, Director, CVRDE was the chief guest. He spoke on the ‘Technology advancement in defence’ and elaborated on the function of the department with pictures and videos. The lecture ended with a Q&A session where students put forth various queries. He urged students to come up with ideas and innovations that will help the Defence Forces.

Dean (CET) Dr. T.V. Gopal in his presidential address elaborated on the rankings and accreditation of SRMIST. 

He said, “This is the first venue for this lecture series. Such event will help in students in channelizing their aims and providing them with more opportunity to help build a stable and sustainable future. This will be an opportunity to learn.”

Five Programs at SRMIST Get NBA Accreditation


Five undergraduate programs at the SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Kattankulathur received accreditation by National Board of Accreditation (NBA).  The programs in Biotechnology and Mechanical have been given an accreditation for six years (2021-22 to 2026-27). Civil, EEE and ECE have been given three years accreditation.

Speaking on the latest developments, Vice Chancellor of SRMIST, Dr. C. Muthamizhchelvan said, “This is a significant achievement in continuation of providing quality education to students. Our academic excellence, research and innovation, internships and placements have enabled us to get the NBA accreditation.”

He has also urged students and faculty to continue to excel in all areas, with more focus on research on energy, water, environment and health care which are very much needed to sustain life.

Inaugural ceremony of “Swachhata pakhwada 2021”


SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur is holding Swachhata Pakhwada 2021, a fortnight-long program observed to ensure mass participation of citizens in Swachhata activities. The inauguration for the event was held on 1st September virtually. About 60 members, including Deans, Directors, faculty members and students, participated in this initiative.  

Dr. P. Supraja, from Swatchhata organizing team gave a short note on the Institute’s action plan towards Swachhata Pakhwada 2021. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. T. Rajasekaran, professor from Mechanical Engineering and NSS Coordinator of SRMIST. Registrar of SRMIST Dr. S. Ponnusamy gave the presidential address and shared valuable information about Swachhata initiative in the campus. Director (IHM) Dr. D. Antony Ashok Kumar shared his own experience and importance of swatch movement in the felicitation note.

Dr. V. M. Gayathri from Swatchhata organizing team delivered the pledge to devote towards 'Swachchhata' of our motherland and all the dignitaries and participants have taken an oath for the same. Associate Director (Campus Life) & Nodal Officer for Unnat Bharat Abhiyan Dr. V. Thirumurugan thanked all the dignitaries and participants who took part on the inaugural ceremony.

Swachhata Pakhwada 2021, as a part of Swachh Bharat Abhiayan launched by Government of India, is a fortnight-long program observed to ensure mass participation of citizens in Swachhata activities and to transform Swachh Bharat into a citizen’s movement. MHRD has directed to all educational institutions to take part in Swachhata Pakhwada 2021 and to set the tone and pace for the Swachhata movement in the country.
