SRM team wins Chengalpattu District Volleyball Championship


The volleyball men and women’ team of SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Kattankulathur won the SRM Trophy for men and Jones Foundations Trophy for women respectively. The event was organized by Chengalpattu District Volleyball Association (Affiliated to Tamilnadu State Volleyball Association) was held at SRMIST.

About 51 teams, both men and women, participated in the three day event. Dr. R. Dhinakaran, IPS, Inspector General of Police inaugurated the championship. Present for the inauguration was Registrar of SRMIST Dr. S. Ponnusamy, Chairman of SNJ Group of Companies S. N. Jeymurugan, Life president of TNSVA R. Arjun Durai, Director (Sports) SRMIST Dr. K Vaithianathan, General Secretary TNSVA A. J. Martin Sudhakar.

Speaking at the inaugural Dr. R. Dhinakaran said, “Each player should give their best and achieve. It does not matter if you win or lose, but participation.”

At a nail biting finish SRM Spikers won over D.B.Jain to claim the SRM Trophy for men. In the women’ finals Dr. Paarivendhar bet SRMIST to win the Jones Foundations Trophy for women.

Mr. Sai Prakash Leo Muthu, Chairman of Sairam Institutions presented the trophy to the men’ team. Vice Chancellor of SRMIST Dr. C. Muthamizhchelvan presented the women’s team winner with their trophy.

In his speech, Dr. C. Muthamizhchelvan said, “More than the games, the comradeship between different teams is important. This can be seen in this game.”


Over 1200 students participate in the Freshers’ Induction program at SRMIST

The Freshers' Induction 2021-22 program for the College of Science and Humanities at SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur was held virtually today (30 August 2021). Over 1200 students participated in this event.

The chief guest of the event Dr. N. K. Senthamarai Kannan, Inspector General of Police, Tamil Nadu & Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli addressed the gathering. He said the Institute needs to take adequate precaution when classes start physically such as masking, washing, social distancing, and vaccination. Emphasizing on the need to become job creators, he urged the incoming students to focus on developing skills and have a multidisciplinary approach so that they become entrepreneurs. He pointed out that pandemic has changed the outlook of job opportunities.

“Students should pursue studies depending on the need of the demand. It is important to opt for skilled certification.” He also advised students to distance themselves from all sort of bad habits and give importance to health, sports, and hobbies.

Founder Chancellor of SRMIST, Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar said, “SRMIST is not a college but an University by itself. It has over 80% of students from other states and countries and students will have the opportunity to mix with a wide diversity of people. Learning other culture aids in molding oneself. This will you an opportunity to bring out your talent and uniqueness.”

Pro Chancellor (Academics) of SRMIST, Dr. P. Sathyanarayanan said, “The assets of SRMIST are not its roads and building but its students and faculties. The need of the hour is interdisciplinary education and SRMIST is the right platform of it. We are moving towards interdisciplinary society and this mode of education will aid towards it.”

He pointed out that the learning methodology in SRMIST is active, where students are put through problems to understand what they study and learn.

In his inaugural address, Vice Chancellor of SRMIST, Dr. C. Muthamizchelvan explained to students the history of the university, its growth, programs offered in different schools, campuses, sports and its facilities and so on. Urging students to focus their attention on perusing research he said, “SRMIST is different from other Higher Education System. Our special focus is research, towards which the Institution has been contributing massively.”

Registrar of SRMIST, Dr. S. Ponnusamy said, “The transition from school to college is different. It is important to focus on studies for the next few years. SRMIST has lots of facilities and students should made use of what is available.”

National Sports Day observed at SRMIST


National Sports Day 2021 was observed at SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur in a grand manner. The event held virtually showcased the talent hub of SRMIST in the arena of sports.

Organised by Department of Physical Education & Sports, the National Sports Day speech was delivered by Col. Dr. G. Thiruvasagam, President, Association of Indian Universities and Vice Chancellor, AMET University, Chennai. Vice Chancellor of SRMIST Dr. C. Muthamizhchelvan delivered the special address.

In his address, Col. Dr. G. Thiruvasagam said, “SRMIST has excellent sports infrastructure that allows its students to expand their talents.” He also emphasized that to lead a good and healthy life physical fitness is needed.

The highlight of the event was SRMIST’s sports gems who participated in this event which was attended by over 250 members.

Ms. Nethra Kumanan, 3rd B.Tech (Mech), who represented India in Sailing in the recent Toyko Olympics 2020 spoke on the support she received in SRMIST.

Ms. Malvika Bansod, 2nd B.Tech (CSE), who has been ranked India No.2 in Indian Badminton also expressed her joy in being part the institution.  Mr. Arjun Kalyan, 2nd year B.Com, Chess Grand Master; Ms. Gayathri, 2nd year MBA, Indian Basketball Player; Mr. Trilok Nag, 1st year, MBA, U-19 Indian Cricket Player and Mr. T. Srikanth, 1st year, M.Sc (Yoga), Indian Volleyball Player also spoke on the occasion to explain their games and how SRMIST has been an integral part of their sports career.

Director (Sports) Dr. K. Vaithianathan was present on the occasion. The vote of thanks was proposed by Associated Director (Sports) Dr. R. Mohanakrishnan.


SRM, PPG Asian Paints to collaborate on various domains


SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Kattankulathur signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PPG Asian Paints Pvt. Ltd. Sriperumbudhur.

The key highlights of this MoU include: FIIP-Faculty Industry Immersion Program for SRMIST Faculty members; to offer internships and projects; Scheduled training programs to SRMIST faculties, technical assistants and students at various emerging domains; Support to SRMIST in various Institute Committees (BOS-Board of Studies, CAB-Corporate Advisory Board, Syllabus framing); Mutual sharing of Infrastructure and Test Facilities (GCMS, FTNIR, SRM-BRIN, NRC & RI); Training of PPG-Asian Paints executives at our SRM BRIN Centre of Excellence in Automation Technologies; Educational Enhancement Programs for PPG-Asian Paint Executives (B.Tech., M.Tech. & Ph.D Programs).

SRM Deans & Directors participate in interactive Leadership program

'Conundrums and The Power of Straight Lines', a Leadership program for Deans and Directors of SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) was held at the Institute's premises. Lt Gen A. Arun YSM SM VSM, General Officer Commanding, HQ, Dakshin Bharat Area did an interactive session on how to be efficient leaders. 

Vice Chancellor of SRMIST, Dr. C. Muthamizhchelvan welcomed the guest and said this session will be an eye-opener. About 46 Deans and Directors participated in this event, which took place with social distancing.

Speaking at the event, Lt Gen A. Arun said, "We don't need one more engineer but our focus should be on creating entrepreneurs. Believe in yourself, believe in people, and most importantly have an impeccable belief and faith in your superior."

He added that DNA is wired with Drive and passion, Desire to lead, Integrity, and Intelligence. He emphasized that as leaders one must have a vision, build teams, motivate, mentor, develop people, and allocate tasks.

To make leadership easy he suggested, "First create a vision, set goals (reasonable ones), focus on others dreams, share the excitement, involve everyone, communication (thinking, listening, speaking and nonverbal), motivation, share stories and practice compassion."

He then listed out the four most common traits of leadership: Supporting others, Seeking new perspective, Outcome driven: results, and solving problems.

"Changes in an organization and icebergs are similar. It involves 10% organizational rule system and 90% of emotions, culture, and people."

Concluding his presentation, Lt. Col A. Arun said, "The most supreme lesson that leaders should follow is to find a way to keep yourself happy. Because your challenge is to be architects of the future... not defenders of the decline. It is important for leaders such as yourselves to create leaders."

Registrar Dr. S. Ponnusamy presented the vote of thanks and assured the guest speaker Lt. Col. A. Arun that all the Deans and Directors present would put to use these suggestions so that they help grow together.

SRM Hospital opens three Centres of Excellence on the occasion of its Founder’s Day


SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre (SRM MCH&RC), Kattankulathur today launched its new layout for their website. This was done on the occasion of its Founder’s Day. The event held at the hospital premises was presided over by SRM Group of Institution’s Founder Chancellor Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar, MP. Apart from launching the website, three Centre of Excellence were inaugurated by SRMIST’s Pro Chancellor (Academics) Dr. P. Sathyanarayanan.

The three centres of excellence are: Division of Cleft lift Palate and Crania Facial Anomalies in the Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. This is partnered with  ‘SMILE TRAIN’, an US based charity organization for the treatment of Cleft lift palate defects in children free of cost; the Department of E&T has started a new division of Neurootology and Vestibular Laboratory. This is jointly operated by ENT, Neurology, Audiology, Vestibular Therapy, and Physical medicine Rehabilitation. Dealing with patient vertigo and complex, head ache. The third Centre of Excellence is Clinical trial research unit. SRM hospital was selected by ICMR for the conduct of COVAXIN Clinical trial. It is the only hospital in Tamil Nadu to have achieved this distinction. All three phases of the trial were conducted here and the new centre has been constructed and that was inaugurated today.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar said, “This institution should excel among all others in India. Our aim should be providing maximum free service for patients. This hospital has made a big change under the leadership of its Pro Chancellor (Academics) Dr. P. Sathyanarayanan. Under me it was only a medical college, now it has grown to become a state-of-the-art hospital.”

“This is an important milestone in the history of SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre. SRM has always been known for imparting education and all that is related to it,” said Dr. P. Sathyanarayanan. He urged doctors to take up more research so that they can treat patients better. “Our motto should be ‘Corporate level of healthcare for poor patients’. All patients will be treated with due respect and be guided with whatever doubts they have.”

Praising the good relationship between Tzu Chi University and SRM he said, “This is only the beginning of a good relationship between SRM and Taiwan University. We would like to reciprocate it in some other way.”

SRM MCH&RC is a tertiary care teaching hospital attached to SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST). The hospital has been existing since 2005. In 2011, Post graduate courses in all specialties in Medicare were started. At present the hospital has bed strength of 1590 in various specialties it is located in the University campus and meet all the regulations of National Accreditation Board for hospitals & Healthcare Providers. With the compliment of 351 doctors including specialties, 574 nurses and in the paramedical administrative staffs. There are 45 departments in broad and super specialties. On an average 1500 – 1600 patients attend in the OP.

This hospital was in the fore front of the fight against COVID 19 pandemic during this period 3111 patients were treated since April 2020 to till date. About 13,165 OP patients were screened during this period. The hospital has specialties to conducts through telemedicine centre. Although this is the largest hospital located in the national highway NH 45 in the outskirt of Chennai it is located well inside the Institute’s premises.

During the 2nd wave of COVID 19 patient in the hospital was fully sketched and shortage of oxygen made matters worse. At that time, a large consignment of 162 oxygen concentrators was donated by Tzu Chi University and the charity foundation from Taiwan. The next lot of 5 ventilators are being delivered shortly (total cost 1.75 crore). This great deed of compassion and donation that we received is being recorded publically by SRMIST Chancellor who offered his thanks to Tzu Chi University for their generosity. The global donations by Tzu Chi University was webcast to the audience during the programme.

The event ended with the celebration of the birthday of Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar and the symbolic cake cutting ceremony.


SRM Cricket team wins 51st All India YSCA Trophy

It was indeed a proud moment for SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Kattankulathur as the cricket team won the 51st All India YSCA Trophy tournament.

Team SRMIST played against Freyer International in the finals and emerged winners. SRMIST chased a target of 172 with a three-wicket win. SRMIST cricket team entered finals beating Guru Nanak College by 6 wickets.

Dr. Ashok Sigamani, vice president TNCA; Prabhu, MD of Sumangali Homes and Srinivasa Raju, MD of Freyer International gave away the prizes.


Independence Day celebration at SRM


The 75th Independence Day was held at SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Kattankulathur with social distancing. The event kick-started with the Vice Chancellor of SRMIST, Dr. C. Muthamizhchelvan hosting the National Flag and taking the NCC salute.

The welcome address was delivered by Director (Sports) Dr. K. Vaithianathan

In his address, Dr. C. Muthamizhchelvan said, “The NEP -2020 spells a long-term vision with a far-reaching impact. It will strengthen the culture of inclusive innovation and institution in the sphere of Education. Imparting education in the mother tongue has been given emphasis in order to help young minds grow spontaneously. This will strengthen Indian languages as well as the unity of the country.”

He also emphasized that SRM had produced over 1,00,000 future-ready graduates thereby contributing to the nation’s economy. He lauded the service of the frontline workers at SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Kattankulathur. “Our doctors and their teams have treated a little over 3000 COVID cases putting their service before self.”

“We are proud that SRM also plays a huge role in sports and games of the nation. Some of our students have been part of the major participants and contributions are as follows: Ms. Nethra Kumaran, 3rd year B.Tech student represented and participated in this year’s Olympics in Sailing; Ms. Gayathri, 2nd Year, MBA is now in the Indian camp for Asia Cup for Basketball; SRM Chess Men and Women Team is participating in the Asian Championship and is representing AIU; 19 players of our institution are representing AIU and participating in the world university games; Malvika, 2nd Year, B. Tech is No.2 in India in Badminton. She has won 4 gold medals in International competitions; Srinath, 1st year, B.Sc. is participating in Junior Asia Volleyball team championship and the list goes on.”

The program concluded with a cultural performances and sports for those present.


Rotary International honours SRM Vice Chancellor


Vice Chancellor of SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur Dr. C. Muthamizhchelvan was honored with the prestigious “Vocational Excellence Award” recently.

He was honored at the installation program of Rotary International - RI District 3232 new President held in Maraimalai Nagar, Chengalpattu District.

The award was presented by Kalaimamani Rtn. S.V.R.M. Ramanathan RI – 3230 PDG Governor, Madras Central, (2003 – 2004) for his tireless service in the field of Education, with special mention of his conscientious dedication, high standing excellence, and contribution.

SRM Instates its Home-Grown Talent to the Top Leadership Position of the University

District Collector inaugurated free COVID vaccine camp at SRM


Chengalpattu District Collector, Thiru A. R. Rahul Nadh, IAS inaugurated the Vaccination Camp for Chennai Suburban Hoteliers at SRM Institute of Hotel Management (IHM), Kattankulathur. 

About 200 hoteliers got themselves vaccinated at this camp which was organized by South India Hotels and Restaurants Association in association with District Administration, Chengalpattu.

Speaking at the event, District Collector Thiru A. R. Rahul Nadh said, "Hoteliers are the most vulnerable people because all of us eat without our masks. So it is important that they take the vaccine first."He urged the Association to help in achieving 100% vaccination for all hoteliers in Chengalpattu.

Director Operations of South India Hotels and Restaurants Association, Mr. Sundar Singaram also emphasized the fact that hoteliers are also frontline workers and they need to be vaccinated on a priority basis.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Director (IHM) & Deputy Registrar (SRMIST) Dr. Antony Ashok Kumar.

Also present were Dr. Anuradha DO of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and Ms. Priya Mohan of South India Hotels and Restaurants Association.


SRM now offers MSc Atmospheric Science for students


SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) is offering M.Sc in Atmospheric Science from the academic year 2021. This program is offered by the Department of Physics, School of Applied Sciences, SRMIST. Masters in Atmospheric Science is an emerging programme attracting many students to pursue their careers in global warming, climate change and weather forecasting.

This program offers the Learning Outcomes based Curriculum Framework (LOCF) as recommended by University Grants Commission (UGC), Govt of India. Skill based courses such as Atmospheric observations, weather modeling lab etc., are included in the program.

A dedicated semester is allotted for carrying out the project in the national scientific laboratories and institutions. The training and knowledge gained by the students of M.Sc Atmospheric Science will help them to grab the scientific positions offered by India Meteorological Department (IMD), National Institutions, private weather forecasting, air quality agencies, and in NGOs working in the areas of climate change, environmental modeling etc. It is also helpful in clearing the screening processes for several atmospheric positions offered by the international agencies such as NASA, NCEP NCAR etc.
