SRM Tamil Perayam awards 2021


SRM Tamil Perayam awards (Thamizh Academy Awards) is to be held SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur. Nominations are invited for the following awards: Pudhumaippithan Padaippilakkiya Virudhu, Bharathiyar Kavithai Virudhu, Valliappa Kuzhanthai Ilakkiya Virudhu, G.U. Pope Translation Award, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technology Award, Muthutthandavar Thamizhisai Virudhu, Parithimar Kalaingnar Thamizh Aivaringnar Virudhu, Muthamizh Arignar Kalaignar Social Justice award, Sudesamithiran Thamizh Idhazh Virudhu, Arunachalakkavirayar Virudhu and Paarivendhar Painthamizh Virudhu (Lifetime Achievement Award) of Rs.3,00,000. The winners will be awarded to the best contribution towards the Tamil language, literature & culture for 2021.

SRM student become India's 68th Grandmaster

SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) is proud to announce that its student Arjun Kalyan has become India’s 68th Grandmaster recently. This 18-year-old is pursuing his first year in B.Com at SRMIST. He has crossed the 2500 ELO mark after scoring a win at the ongoing GM Round Robin “Rujna Zora-3” in Serbia. Arjun had come close to becoming a Grandmaster in the previous tournament last week but has missed it by a whisker. Arjun Kalyan is an IM with two GM norms and has an ELO of 2500. He scored his first GM norm at the Biel Masters 2018 and followed it up with his second GM norm at the Roquetas De Mar. We are proud to have him as our student here at SRMIST and wish him many more laurels in the future.

SRMIST women team wins All India Volleyball tourney


The women Volleyball team of SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur won the All India Volleyball tournament title recently. The tourney was held at Bangarupalyam, Chittoor (dt.) AP from 16th to 18th April 2021.

SRMIST team emerged winners betting PKR College, Gobi, with 25-20, 25-16 and later Mysore Sports Hotel with 24-26, 25-19, 25-11 points. We wish the team our hearty congratulations.

World Voice Day 2021 observed in SRMIST


Department of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology at SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Kattankulathur recently conducted World Voice Day with a focuson developing awareness about the importance of voice and celebrating thephenomenon of voice, a unique asset to mankind.  The theme for this year was “One World, Many Voices”. 

The Department of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology at SRM MCH&RC kicked off the celebrations of World Voice Day on 15 April 2021. Dean (Medical) Prof. Dr. A. Sundaram,delivered the inaugural address and Pro-Vice Chancellor (Medical & Health Sciences) Prof. Lt. Col. Dr. A. Ravikumar delivered the key note address highlighting the theme of this year’s event.

A public education video titled ‘Be kind with your voice’ was released on the occasion. The students of the department conducted an interview with Dr. Prakash Boominathan, one of the leading voice pathologists in Chennai. The interview highlighted on Voice Sciences and Disorders as an area of specialization in Speech Language Pathology, and provided a fun interactive way for students to get empowered about voice sciences.

The Department has also organized a free consultation camp for voicebetween 26th and 30th of April, 2021 forfaculty members of SRM Institute of Science and Technology. A team of speech pathologists and ENT specialists would collaborate to conduct this camp. This would create awareness amongst professionals, especially teachers, who are dependent on their usage of voice.

This pandemic situation has placed increased demands on teaching faculties on several aspects including their vocal usage. This camp will help members of the teaching faculty to get their voice assessed and develop awareness on vocal health/hygiene to preserve and use their voice box effectively.

In addition, on account of World Voice Day, students pursuing Speech Language Pathology and Audiology Courses atSRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre were provided with learning opportunities and creative events including interactive sessions, quiz competitions and designing e-posters.


IEEE conducts three day international virtual hackathon at SRMIST


The Department of IEEE at SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur conducted HackTrix, a three day international virtual hackathon with an add-on Conference recently.  Students choose from eight diverse tracks to pit against each other as they revolutionized their chosen field. The event turned out to be the perfect place for participants to foster their learning skills. The flagship hackathon, 'HackTrix', was presided by leaders and veterans of their respective fields as the judges’ panel.

Participants were from Australia, Germany, USA, Canada, Russia, Turkey, Mexico among others. With a vision to coordinate splendid mentalities, IEEE SRM Student Branch constantly tries to incorporate Discussion, Demonstration & Development, and encourage technological advances in new arenas and promote application-based knowledge.

Winners of this mega event were TRIX4 as the Winners of HackTrix; Commit Cats for First Runners Up; Second Runners Up goes to Code Linguists and, an Honorary mention was awarded to Ctrl-Alt-Elite.

Judges include Alon Grinshpoon, CEO and founder of echoAR; Mr. Soham Dixit - Alumni of SRMIST and winner of “Smart India Hackathon 2018” and “Airbus Hackathon (Aerothon 2019)”; Mr. Akshay Saini, Founder & CEO of Boiling News, with us on the esteemed panel of the event. He's been with Paytm as an SDE and currently with Uber; Mr. Satya Iyengar; Mr. Devasheesh Saxena is the Principal Architect and Global Delivery Leader for Digital Business for QuEST Global.

For the Mentors’ panel, we had Ayon Roy who has been a mentor in 70+ hackathons; SDE1 at Hackerrank, Aditya Agarwal, then we had TR Rohith who is a Software Engineering Intern at Bajaj Health; Jahanavi Bhagat, a mentor at Tesseract Coding and Praveen Kumar Puroshattam an ex-Microsoft MVP. That’s not all, we also had over with us Sahil Rahman, a mentor at Future Blink and Anustup Mukherjee who is a mentor from Dark Horse. That’s not the end, we also had international members joining us, Bormotov Dmitrii who is a mentor from Flow Health and Michael Pautav, mentor from Deem incorporated.

From the IEEE SRM SB Web Dev domain, we had Ahmed Mawia, Harsh Gour and Shaurya Bhandari as our mentors. Mr. Ahmed Mawia is a full stack developer with understanding of software development concepts. He is currently experimenting with blockchain technology and the decentralized web. He was the winner of VIT HACKATHON held in 2020 and was the Web Dev Leader at IEEE SRM SB. He is also an SDE INTERN at FIBONALABS and got selected as a MENTOR FOR GIRLSCRIPT SUMMER OF CODE 2021. Mr. Gour is an experienced developer and a SD Intern with FibonaLabs and the Web Development Lead for IEEE SRM SB while Mr. Snehil is a Software intern at Shoopy, a full stack engineer and a Unity Game Dev. We also had Aditya Jyoti Paul from IEEE SRM SB R&D domain as our mentor.


SRM student becomes first Indian women to qualify for Olympics


SRM Institute of Science and Technology's (SRMIST) student Nethra Kumanan has become the first Indian woman to qualify for the upcoming Olympics. She will be representing India in sailing and confirmed her berth in the Tokyo Olympics recently.

She qualified for the Tokyo Olympics by coming first at the Laser Radial event in the Mussanah Open Championship, a joint Asian and African Olympic qualifying event. 

A second-year engineering student of SRMIST, she has represented the country at the 2014 and 2018 Asian Games in Incheon and Jakarta, respectively. 

She became the first Indian woman to win a World Cup medal in sailing when she clinched a bronze medal at 2020 Sailing World Cup in Miami, USA. She will now become the first Indian woman sailor to represent the country at the Olympics. This 23-year-old professional sailor is a resident of Chennai and has made her Institution proud. She trains in the Canary Islands, Spain.

Nethra Kumanan was felicitated by SRMIST’s Pro Chancellor (Administration) Mr. Ravi Pachamoothoo, Vice Chancellor (Interim) Dr. C Muthamizhchelvan, Registrar (Interim) Dr. S. Ponnusamy and Director (Sports) Dr. K. Vaithianathan for qualifying for the upcoming Olympics and making her Institution proud.

On her part, Nethra thanked her faculty and Institution for being her constant support. She said, “I am studying under the sports quota in SRM and the Institution has been very supportive of my sport. I train in Spain and every time I skip classes my professors have been kind enough to help me once I get back.”

This young champ will soon be traveling back to Canary Island to continue her training.


Awareness meeting on Disease Prevention and Control – COVID19


Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Government of Tamil Nadu in association with Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0 and SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathurorganized an awareness meet on ‘Disease Prevention and Control – COVID- 19 on 7 April 2021. Over 150 faculties, non-teaching staff, and research scholars participated in the event, which was conducted with all COVID safety precautions in place.

The welcome address was given by SRMIST’s Associate Director (Campus Life) Dr.V.Thirumurugan Nodal officer – UBA.The presidential speech was given by Dr.V.V.Anantharaman, HOD, Department of Community Medicine from SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre.

Chief guest and speaker of the event Mr.C.Maria Arputhasamy, District Health Educator, DPH – IEC team and Mr. G. Loganathan, Health inspector, DPH – IEC team.C.Maria Arputhasamyspoke on ‘Disease Prevention and Control – COVID19’. Surprising facts about COVID19 were discussed by him. Participants has a Q&A session and cleared their doubts related to COVID19. Dr.V.V.Anandharamantested knowledge of the participants by asking questions.
