Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Groups (SEDGs) Cell

Definition

Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Groups (SEDGs) are defined as individuals who, due to historical factors and prevailing social, economic, educational, vocational, or locational disadvantages—lackof equal access to the facilities and opportunities available in higher education.

Context and Vision

While accessibility to quality education is a global challenge, India identifies several specific groups that have historically lagged behind in the educational sector, including women, minorities, SCs, STs, OBCs, PwDs, and EWS. A primary goal of the Government of India is to ensure inclusive development by bringing all these groups into the national growth narrative.

NEP 2020 Mandate

In alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, there is a renewed emphasis on addressing the unique challenges – socio-cultural, economic, and historical – faced by SEDG students. The NEP 2020 specifically identifies these groups and mandates increased participation and equitable access, particularly within the Higher Education Institutions
