Summer School Sep-Oct 2020: Understanding the Challenges of Developing Country: Culture, Identity and Development.

SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly SRM University) Summer School facilitates direct contact with the culture of the host country. Through a series of activities, participants will be able to find commonalities through shared experiences. The SRM IST Summer School is designed to promote, albeit in a small way, understanding and, eventually, a better world.

The SRM Summer School delivered by India’s No 1 multi stream university, located near the ancient and historic city of Chennai( previously known as Madras), in the state of Tamil Nadu, builds on a legacy of previous short term immersion programmes delivered to students from the UK, Singapore, Indonesia and South Korea.

The 2 week programme will involve a combination of the following:

  • Learning a local language for conversational purposes , and understand how language and culture are inextricably linked
  • Learn about local culture, customs, religion and why cultural identity is important and how it gives identity to the country and its people.
  • Exploring cultural and historical sites such as the Pallava Dynasty Mahabalipuram, and taking part in exciting cultural activities, ancient temples, and the city of Chennai which was the base for the establishment of the British East India Company that led to Britain’s colonization of India
  • Giving back to the community teaching English and Science to children in a rural school
  • Learning how to evaluate the socio-economic needs of a local village to design appropriate technology tools for local solutions, eg drinking water, sanitation, pollution control, etc
  • Learn about the University’s Entrepreneurship Program, being run in partnership with the University of California, Berkeley, and equip yourself with the cultural knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the emerging Indian industry.
  • Visit an Agricultural Farm and learn about the agricultural practices being adopted , in a country where over 70 % of the country lives in rural areas, with Agriculture forming the backbone of the industry

Course dates: Sep 28, 2020 to Oct 11, 2020

Cost: 1500 USD all inclusive; accommodation in a 3 star hotel, triple sharing basis.
