Lactobacillus species are Gram-positive, non-spore forming, rod shaped, generally non-motile, and facultative anaerobes. Probiotics are “live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host” as defined by World Health Organization. They are widely present in the gastrointestinal tract, human vagina, and fermented foods. The species of genus Lactobacillus varied in different habitats. Apart from being used in dairy and food industry, they are proposed to be an alternative for prevention in urinary tract infection. They are well known producers of bacteriocins, proteins or polypeptides which possess antimicrobial activity against a narrow spectrum of microorganisms. Many Lactobacillus species are given a “Generally Recognized as Safe” status. This facilitates the usage of this organism highly in food industry, probiotics, and recently into pharmaceutical industry.
