About the department


SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University)'s Chemistry Department has been engaged in opening up the fascinating world of Chemistry to students since 1985. The Department comprises of a goal oriented group of highly qualified, experienced and dynamic faculty members. The Department offers  B.Sc. M.Sc. and Ph.D Programmes.


The Department of Chemistry has 50 faculty members whose areas of expertise and research include inorganic, organic, physical, environmental, electrochemistry and nanotechnology. They participate in training and development activities, which keep them up-to-date in the current development of chemical sciences and help to promote advanced research activities. Students are guided in their Ph.D., PG and UG level programs in Engineering and Technology.


The Department has independent laboratories fully equipped with instruments and consumables, and advanced equipments for teaching and research activities. The major research facilities available in the department of chemistry are LC/MS, Powder X-ray Diffractometer, Thermo Gravimetric Analyzer, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, BET Analyzer, Gas chromatograph, FT-IR spectrophotometer, UV-visible spectrophotometer, Electrochemical work station etc.

Activities and Achievements

  • The Department is supported By DST-FIST, Govt. of India with a total out lay of Rs. 146 lakhs during 2015-2020.
  • Faculty members of Department of Chemistry are awarded with DST-SERB Fast Track / ECR / EMR projects with a total out lay of Rs.945.64 lakhs.
  • The Department faculty members got their Ph.D degree from reputed institutes like, IITM, IITK, IITB, BARC, NCL (Pune), IICT (Hyderabad), Ecole poly technique (France), University of Edinburgh, (UK), NTU (Taiwan), Kyung Hee University (South Korea), NUS (Singapore), IIT (Kharagpur), University of Madras, Anna University etc.,
  • The faculty members were awarded with the prestigious fellowships like CSIR (India), Alexander Von Humboldt (Germany),CNRS (France),Taiwan Scholarship,The President fellowship (Korea),FCT (Portugal), JSPS(Japan), Marie Curie(France), Max-Planck Society(Germany),FWO(Belgium), PBC(Israel).
  • The faculty members were awarded with 20 patents and filed 15 patents.
  • 37 candidates were awarded Ph.D degree from Department of Chemistry, SRM IST
  • Currently 237 Ph.D scholars (including 10 part-time scholars) and 8 PDF (5 in DST-SERB - NPDF Scheme) are doing research in the Department.
  • 118 students were awarded M.Sc. Chemistry (including 18 International Students) and 94 students were awarded B.Sc. Chemistry degree from the Department of Chemistry, SRM IST.


There are 50 approved guides as resource persons to guide Ph.D candidates. Currently 237 research scholars are working for their Ph.D including 10 part time candidates.

The Department has tie-ups with recognized institutions, industries and R&D laboratories for student projects, training and research activities.
