It is a unique undergraduate course in nuclear science and engineering available to students. No other Institution offers such a course at undergraduate level. India has set a target to achieve more than 20000 MWe in Nuclear power by 2020. In this field India is self reliant. The recent interest of other nations to have nuclear agreements stems from the fact that today India is considered as a fully developed nuclear power. With nuclear renaissance taking place, other countries need skilled manpower to build and operate nuclear power plants. With so many nuclear plants and increased application of Nuclear science in medicine, agriculture, non destructive testing and host of other applications, this university has foreseen the need for Nuclear expertise not only in India, but other countries like USA, France etc. Nuclear Engineering is considered to be highly intellectually challenging, exciting and vigorous discipline having variety of applications and SRM university launched the B.Tech Course in Nuclear Science and Engg. in 2009.The course is broad based and provides a full exposure to the student.

The Course covers besides the Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Basic Engineering in all principal disciplines, engineering graphics, workshop, Neutron Physics, Nuclear Thermo Hydraulics, Materials for Neutron Applications, Reactor Theory, thermonuclear Fusion, Molecular and Cell biology, Biological effects of Radiation, Nuclear Fuel cycle and offers electives in Reactor Safety, Medical Informatics, Engineering of Nuclear Power systems, High Intensity Laser plasma Interactions and Operations research.
SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) has signed MoUs with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic research (IGCAR) for mutual cooperation in joint research, teaching and real time projects in the field of nuclear reactor designs, radiation detection and measurement, radiation treatment and imaging for medical and industrial applications
