Industry Institute Interaction

Numerous initiatives aiming at promoting interaction between the department and the industries are taken. This will have great bearing on the Engineering Curriculum, exposure of industrial atmosphere to engineering students and subsequent placement of young graduating engineers in industries across the country. To promote Industry Institute Interaction the following initiatives are being undertaken

  • Organizing Workshops, International & National conferences with joint participation of the faculty and the industries.
  • Value added courses in collaboration with Industries.
  • Arranging invited lectures by professionals from industry.
  • Participation of experts from industry in curriculum development.
  • Arranging visits of staff members to various industries.
  • Consultancy work rendered to industries.
  • Providing technical support to the industrial consultants for various industrial processes.
  • Extending academic support to the industrial consultants using real time application softwares.
  • Visits of faculty to industry for study and discussions on moulding students’ project to comply with industrial standard.
  • Memoranda of Understanding with industries to bring the two sides strategically closer.
  • Collaboration with companies for submission of proposals to funding agencies.

Industrial Interactions

  • Relay coordination for a 100 kV Sub-Station using ETAP - technical support to M/s Indus High Power Consultancy.
  • Harmonics measurement done at works of M/s Kaleesuwari Refineries Limited under students projects in real time industry.
  • Harmonics study was done at M/s SRM Auto Tech by Power Quality Team in the department.
  • Harmonics survey was done at M/s Hindustan Unilever Limited under technical supporting work to M/s Indus High Power Consultancy.
  • Power Quality study for industrial problem at M/s GE Industries, Pallavaram under technical support to M/s ITEK engineers.
  • The students are provided with internship training in National Instruments and VI Microsystems PVt. Ltd.
  • The Resource persons from National Instruments have provided full support in developing new experiments in LIC lab and power system lab in industry standard.
  • The students are provided with technical training session from National Instruments, Bangalore
  • The students are provided with technical interaction with L&T resource person regarding power system R& D.

Industrial Consultancy

The industrial consultancy is being done for the following:

  • M/s WALLVISIONBV, Netherlands, Pilot study of ZIGZAG SOLAR plant for Indian conditions - Ongoing
  • M/s Blue Crescent Engineering, Qatar, Energy building solutions

Industrial Training

Industrial training is an important strategy to expose students to real work life situation and to equip them with the necessary skills so that they would be job ready when they graduate. The industrial training has been the part of the curriculum in 5th and 7th semester with the following objectives:

  • Collaborating with M/s Green Pearl Electronics for supporting to the technical training in design of Roof Top Solar PV module

Value Added CoursesValue added courses are conducted aiming to bridge the gap between academic and industrial compliance .It also enhances the employability prospects of the student.

  • Smart Grid and smart metering technologies and its applications in collaboration with FluxGen Engineering Technologies, Bangalore.
  • Protection & Substation Automation-An industrial perspective with Alstom Ltd.Chennai.

Joint Programmes

Various workshops and events are organized in the department in collaboration with industry interaction and to mention a few

  • Workshop on Smart grid and Smart Metering technologies – this workshop provides knowledge of smart meters, integration of smart grids and implementation of micro-grids in rural India.
  • Training Program on Introduction to Solar PV and its Electrical System and components selection. Hands on experience in installation and maintenance.
  • Training programmes in LABVIEW software to students and faculty
  • Training programmes in Data acquisition and monitoring setup to faculty
  • Conducted national level project competition TECHATHON 2018 in collaboration with NIOT and Electronixs lab, Chennai. Industrial experts from that industry were the juries for the competition.

Infrastructure Facilities

  • Texas Instrument (TI) lab has been structured, where components have been provided by Texas Instrument for student and faculty research activities.
  • A research lab with Virtual bench kits & compact RIO, FPGA kits –National Instruments.
  • Sophisticated instruments to conduct energy audit, power quality survey, testing of machineries, experiment relating solutions to real time problems etc.,

Industrial Visits

  • The students of 2nd, 3rd year and 4th year are encouraged to go for industrial visits across the Nation with the objective of visualizing the things studied in the theory and to get exposed to the industrial working environment.
