2. Bridge the Bay
A competition “Bridge the Bay” was conducted with exceptional vitality and style. It proved to be an enviable tale of pleasurable and learning on “Bridge Construction”. In this event participants constructed a suspension bridge using Popsicle sticks. The main idea of the event was to test the concepts of the participants regarding the bridges and their technical application when it comes to practicality.Popsicle sticks according to the given constraints, each team consisted of a minimum of two members and a maximum of three members. A total of 100 teams registered for the event from all over India. In this competition there some different levels to qualify for participations, such as quiz round (the participants were required to qualify a technical multiple choice paper in 45 min to get to the construction round and 15 teams were selected on the basis of quiz round).
Quiz round (5th Sep 2012)
Teams who qualified the quiz made their way to construction round in which the concepts had to be put into practice. In this round the teams were given a problem statement, which included the dimension details, design and other features required. The teams elevated their models on the given plan and the teams were given 12 hours to complete their models. After the completion of the models, the 24-hours drying period was allowed for each team in order to make sure that the adhesive used has dried up and the bridge models have gained their strength.
Construction round (6th Sep 2012)
The bridge models were completed by the end of the Day2 and the next day the bridges were allowed to dry and meanwhile the models were displayed to the faculty members. The models were appreciated by all people and they were astonished to see the models. The faculty, visiting were not only from the department of civil engineering but we also had visits by other department faculty members. As the faculty visits continued meanwhile the bridges got a drying period of 24-hours and then they were ready to be tested on the next day.
“The event is very innovative and realistic.” by Dr. R. Annadurai
The constructed and completed models were adjudged by the faculty members Dr. M. Laxmipathy and Mr. S. Pradeep. The models were given the points for the dimension, design and practicality in reality.
Dimension and Design Test
After the dimension test, the bridge models were tested for their load bearing capacity. The bridges were given points for the load-bearing capacity. In total three prizes were given which included a cash price of Rs. 10000 for the first position, a cash prize of Rs. 7000 for the second position and gift vouchers worth 6000 for the third position. The first two positions were bagged by SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) and the third prize was bagged by Eshwari College of engineering.
An event “AQUABOTIX” was conducted and it proved to be an enviable saga of fun and learning on “Designing a boat which is fast enough to win the race and has optimum gambit to dodge obstacles”. This event was conducted in two rounds: Round 1: participants had to hit the bottles floating particles over water, with balls on it. The aim was to hit and drop as many balls possible and earn maximum points in 3min.Round2: participants had to complete the track in minimum time after dodging the obstacles laid; speed and maneuverability are the two criteria on which the boat is tested upon.
