Genome Informatics (M. Tech)


The Department of Bioinformatics is offering an M.Tech. Course in Genome Informatics. Genome informatics is the field in which computer and statistical techniques are applied to derive biological information from genome sequences.The functions of only a small fraction of the genome are unraveled andthe interpretation of the major chunk is yet to be done.

Biological research is going ultra-molecular. Adventures of Next Generation Sequencing are resulting in a mammoth of data, running in billions of bases. Analysis of this data holds key to various hidden secrets. Genome informatics includes methods to analyze DNA sequence information and to predict protein sequence and structure.

The flow of information from genome to proteome which controls the cellular functioning has become an important ingredient of biological research. Genomics related technologies can help us to examine a diversity of diseases, such as cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes and others. It also holds its applications in all the aspects related to agriculture, insecticide resistance, evolution of virus and bacteria, ethnic basis of diseases.

Pharmacogenomics, a high future oriented phenomenon is expected to revolutionize the disease diagnosis and treatment.  This because the leads identified from this genomic data would help us to a rapid translation of findings into improved patient care through the development of new diagnostics and identification of novel therapeutic targets.

Genome Informatics forms a vital basis for research in computational biology that will enable the development of tools for sequence analysis, gene mapping, complex trait mapping and genetic variation.It also finds its scope in the development and maintenance of databases of genomic and genetic data which include new tools for annotating complex genomes so as to expand their utility.

Genome informatics in a series of computer-based concepts using real NGS data, unix command-line tools and high performance computing resources. Genome Informatics will equip students with hands on knowledge and practical computing skills necessary to undertake a wide range of genome scale analyses using data produced by NGS technologies. At the end of the course student will have an hands on exposure to different NGS oriented experiments at renowned research centers. The course work is designed to ensure the students walks out of SRM as a complete knowledge needed to answer the questions of genome. This is possible because of high end programming languages such as C++, Java, Perl, Python, R, Matlab, Linux, and others.
