Department of Biomedical Engineering

Strong Advisory Board
The department is supported by a very strong advisory board consisting of both International and national members. They help in critical decisions making, choosing the direction and to keep the  department on track for the future.

  • International Advisory Board(IAB)

50 members from top universities across the world including MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley, Cambridge and NUS help set Global Standards. One of our IAB members is

  • Dr. William David Evans,Head, Dept of Medical physics & Clinical Engineering,Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust,University Hospital of Wales,Cardiff ,Wales, UK
  • Corporate Advisory Board(CAB)

Over 60 top executives from leading corporate institutions constantly interact with faculty and students to help in formulating academics and research. A few of them are:

  • Dr. Prabhu Vinayagam ,Director – Clinical services and Pharmacy solutions (Central & South Asia Pacific), BD Medical – Medical Surgical systems
  • Dr.Anish Desai,  M.D. Director- Medical Affairs and Clinical Operations,Johnson & Johnson Medical India,Mumbai

Alliances with Sister Medical Institutions
The department, with a lot of interdisciplinary scope, is on good bonding with hospitals, industry and other academia. The department always works in hand with the sister institutions, SRM Medical College and Hospitals.
The Group of SRM Hospitals is listed as follows:

  • SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Kattankulathur, Chennai
  • Chennai Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Tiruchirapalli
  • SRM Specialty Hospital, Ramapuram, Chennai
  • SRM Dental College, Ramapuram, Chennai
  • SRM Dental College, Kattankulathur, Chennai
  • Upcoming SRM Super-specialty Hospital, Vadapalani, Chennai

SRM Medical Hospital is a 1000-bed hospital housing a wide spectrum of medical specialties and subspecialties, which aims at providing total health care and health protection with its world class infrastructure, experienced doctors and nurses, state of art equipment, patient care personnel who work round the clock to provide the highest standards of medical care.
The department has signed memorandum of understanding with IGCAR (Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research), Kalpakkam and Bharath Scans Pvt Ltd, Chennai. The department does a lot of R &D activities in collaboration with them.
Biomedical Industry Collaboration
The department has a very sound partnership with industry .There are about twenty industrial partners that include MNCs like Johnson & Johnson Medicals, Philips, GE Health Care, BD Medicals,  Radiometer, Transasia, St.Jude, Zimmer etc. The departments ‘interaction with industry was demonstrated during Bioyantra 2012 and MED Expo, a national level workshop (September 2012) that witnessed a lot of industry turning up to showcase their knowledge and interest in the field of Biomedical Engineering.
Socially Relevant Rural Health Screening Camps
The department has the unique feature of associating in R&D work with its sister institutions, SRM Medical College and Hospitals, that are very much in the same campus. This paves way for creating hands on experience in both academic and R &D wing of the department. This alliance has also aided in materializing social welfare and community development activities. A number of Public screening medical camps for Osteoporosis, Diabetes Mellitus and Cardiovascular diseases have been successfully arranged. These camps basically focus on health screenings for the public living in and around Potheri village. The following are a few of them.

  • Free Public Screening for Osteoporosis, at SRM Hospital and Medical College, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University), Kattankulathur, Tamil Nadu, on 28-29th Sep, 2011
  • Free Screening of old aged residents for having a risk of osteoporotic fractures using a Bone Mineral Density Measurement, at Sivanandha Gurukulam’s Aged Home, Potheri village, Kattankulathur, Tamil Nadu on 5-6th Nov, 2011
  • Free Screening Camp for Diabetes and Cardiovascular Diseases (Part of MoU Signed Project Between SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) and IGCAR, Kalpakkam),at SRM Hospital and Medical College, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University), Kattankulathur, Tamil Nadu, on 4th to 6th March 2010
  • The number of participants and beneficiaries of the camp count to a few hundred.

Students Research
Students of the department are immensely encouraged to come up with interdisciplinary and socially relevant projects. They are inspired to present their project findings in International conferences and publish their work in indexed IEEE explorer. Many student projects have won awards & sponsorship. To mention a few of them:

  • “The Design of a blink detection based computer system and application to alarming system” by Ms. Aiswarya Dash (II year M.Tech BME) was sponsored by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science & Technology during the Academic Year 2011-12

Screening camp in Indian Science Congress January 2011
Students of the department conducted a Medical Screening camp during Indian Science Congress meet, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University), January 2011.  Around 400 participants and public were screened for basic parameters like blood sugar using glucometer, blood pressure using automatic sphygmomanometer, Lung function test using spirometer, etc. Clippings of the camp are shown below.
Biomechanics Software

The department is equipped with latest software tools in biomechanics namely:

  • Abacus

Using these software tools students work in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) which are major areas of research interest.
