The Internal Committee (IC) of SRM Institute of Science and Technology in association with School of Mechanical Engineering organized an Awareness talk on ‘Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) at work place separately for faculty members and research scholars of the School on 7th May 2022. The Awareness talk was delivered by Ms. Raghavi Senthilkumar, Director – Headway Academy. Ms. Raghavi Senthilkumar is a social entrepreneur, HR consultant, L&D specialist trainer, mentor, coach, educationist, public & motivational speaker, and a differently abled warrior with 25 prestigious awards. The first session was at 2 PM for research scholars and the second session was held at 3.30 PM on the same day for the faculty members of the School. Both the sessions were of a duration of one and half hour. Around 37 research scholars (34 males and 3 females) and 107 faculty members (98 males and 9 females) participated in the event.
The presentation started with a welcome address by Dr. R Ambigai, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering. Mrs. Raghavi discussed the sexual harassment issues faced by students, research scholars and women in Colleges & Universities. She gave an awareness on different forms of sexual harassment in the workplace, key elements for prevention, How to prevent sexual harassment, the ‘3p’s’ (priorities, philosophy, purpose).
Ms. Raghavi elaborated on the law to protect the women in society and the law to protect women being harassed. She emphasized on Gender sensitization, it is a method of understanding the individuals of both the genders, the physical and psychological aspects. She explained briefly on the difference between harassment and sexual harassment. She also expressed the fact that there are inhibitions of victims not opening up when they are harassed, whether it is an institution, workplace, organization or homes. The POSH Mantra, complaints committee, and policy were highlighted. Ms. Raghavi also threw light upon POSCO law meant for protecting girls and boys below 18 years of age. Policies for anti-sexual harassment laws and zero tolerance towards sexual harassment were also discussed. The event concluded with interaction by participants.
