International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
The IWD celebrations at SRMIST KTRcampus started with full enthusiasm from 23 February 2022, two weeks prior to March 8,2022 by organizing various cultural, sports, cookery and wellness events. An internal Committee with active co-ordinators from various schools of SRMIST KTR campus joined hands in organizing the events. Announcements on the events started during the last week of February 2022. The events were well scheduled and spaced to enable all the women faculty, Staff and students to be a part of the same.
Glimpse of the various cultural events
Various competitions were conducted with the themes related to Women empowerment, Gender Equity, Gender sensitization. The Internal committee and Internal Quality Assurance cell of SRMIST organizes this every year with enthusiasm.
Logo designing
The events kickstarted with the logo design competition for IWD 2022. There were an amazing 156 participants and the best logo was chosen by the judges. Participants had to design a logo for the theme “International Women’s Day” within 60 min to showcase their creation. Individual participation was only allowed and copying from external sources was prohibited. The selected logo was honoured by having it fixed in the banners, invitation and souvenir of IWD 2022. Professor E. Poovammal , Presiding officer, Internal Committee and Dr. P. Subashree Natarajan, Dean, SOM, were the judges for this event.
Poetry
A wow number of 176 participants were given topics on-spot on which they needed to write a poem in their own words. They were asked to make it short and sweet. Both English and Tamil poetry was allowed. The poem had the word limit between 20 to 50 words. The event had good participation and winners were selected based on the scores given by the judges. Dr. S Albert Antony Raj, Dy. Dean, S&H, Dr. Jayanthi. R, Prof. and HoD, Saveetha University, Dr. R. Selva Sundaram, Head, Acct. and Fin, S&H, Dr. Kavitha Nair. Prof. Saveetha University were the judges for the event.
Speech
Next up was the speech competition wherearound 121 participated. This was individual event and topics were given the on-spot. Time limit given was 15 minutes. Both English and Tamil was allowed and the event went well. Winners were selected based on the scores given by the judges; Dr. K Sundaraj, Dr.Munuswamy, Members of Tamil Peryam, SRMIST, Dr. Kavitha Nair, Dr.Jeyanthi Rajendran, Foreign Language Professors SaveethaUniversity , Chennai, were the judges for the event.
Solo Singing
In the solo singing competition, we saw a huge participation of 164. Participants were given a time limit of 3 mins to showcase their singing talent. There was no specific genre given and the winners were selected based on the scores given by the judges Dr. P. Rajeswari of College of Management and Ms.Sheeba, Institute of Hotel Management, SRMIST
Best out of Waste
In this competition, there were 156 participants. Participants were given a time limit of 1.5 hours to create something out of waste to exhibit their innovative ideas and display their skills. No group participation was entertained and no specific theme was given. The ideas on Sustainability were appreciated. The Evaluation was done by the judgesDr.Kantha Arunachalam Dean- CENR and Dr. Padma Venkat, Dean, School of Public Health, SRMIST.
Rangoli
Moving onto some colourful events, the rangoli making competition had 178 participants. It was a team-based event (1 to 3 members per team). The dimension of the Rangoli was 7x7 ft (125 x 125cm). The winners were selected based on the scores given by the judges; Ms.Revathy, digital head ,Kumudam , Ms.S.Kalpana., Journalist with 20+ years experience in Ananda vikatan and Dr.K.S.Lakshmi, Director Admissions - SRMIST
Hair Dressing
In the hair dressing event, 64 participants had participated. Participants were given 30 min to showcase theircreativity.1 – 2 members per team were only allowed and no copying from the external sources. No hair colour allowed and absolutely no adds ons or adds ins of any kind. No hair extension allowed. All styling was supposed to be performed by competitor only. Winners were selected based on the scores given by the judges; Ragavi Gloria, and Mrs. Padma, Professional Hair Stylists.
Debate
With 60 participants, for whom topics were given on-the-spot on which Individual Participation was only allowed. Debate time limit was not to exceed 20 mins. Winners were selected based on the scores given by the judges; Ms.Suganthi.
Mehendi
With 88 participants, participants had to apply mehndi on the palm. Time duration was 1 hour for every participant. Judging criteria was on creativity, design and neatness. Winners were selected based on the scores given by the judges; K Hemasankari
Fashion Walk
83 beautiful contestants participated in the fashion event, every participant was given a time duration of 5 minutes. The participants were judged based on costume, theme, walking stance and attitude. The judges were Ms.Vaishulisavallal, Actress VJ Model Prakash Ganesan, Mr Fashion Charm Chennai 2021 (RFE)
Dance
Placing beautiful dance steps for the dance competitions, we had 102 participants for the solo dance category and 75 participants for the group dance competitions. The participants were given a time duration of 3 to 5 minutes and were judged on factors like choreography and technique. The judges were; Ms.Srividya, RJ Suriyan Films; Mr.Arvinth, Master Bharat, Master Sundar,TES Dance Studio
Cookery events:
The Institute of Hotel Management had organized three events namely Eatathon , Mystery cooking and Desert Queen. The participants were thrilled to work on using the fabulous workstations in IHM. They had a great experience and enjoyed every moment.
IWD-SPORTS
Sports play an important role in building physical and mental capabilities of the person. It enhances the leadership qualities of the person engaged. It enables us to overcome sufferings and worries. Keeping this in mind, various sport events were conducted with overwhelming response. The games included track race, shot put, cricket ball throw, slow cycling, lucky corner, tug of war, badminton, tennikoit etc.
Men for Women:
Men were encouraged to make a themed video on: - “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow". The focus was on the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, gender quality, environmental and disaster risk reduction. No prize was awarded for this event. This event is considered as the special contribution for women by Men including Teaching, Non-Teaching staff members and male students. Only individual Participation was allowed.
Teamwork
The success of all these events had immense teamwork by the beautiful organizers at the back stage.Thanks to the overall organizing team of IWD 2022 from SRMIST, Kattankulathur. Two weeks long celebrations were convened by Dr. E. Poovammal, Presiding Officer –SRMIST.
