The School of Bio Engineering at SRMIST comprises of the following departments:
All the Departments offer undergraduate (B.Tech.), post graduate(M.Tech.) and Ph.D. programmes except the Department of Food Process Engineering which offers two postgraduate and Ph.D. programmes. We have a faculty strength of more than 100 and 90% of the faculty have Ph.D. qualification. More than 60% of the faculty also have post-doctoral experience abroad. The School is well known for research activities and more than 100 full time research scholars are doing their research towards Ph.D. degree. At present we have 5 scholars with Department of Science (DST), INSPIRE fellowships. Many of our faculty are awarded project with funding from National Agencies like, Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and University Grant Commission (UGC).
We successfully completed one "Fund for Improvement of S&T infrastructure in universities & higher educational institutions (FIST)" programme in the School. This program provided instruments like, Liquid Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer (LC-MS) and Supercritical Fluid Extractor. Another FIST programme is currently running in the Department of Biotechnology and a Flowcytometer with Cell sorter facility is established.
SRM-DBT Platform for Advanced Life Science Technologies:
The School is proud to have the above National Facility with an outlay of Rs.16.3 crores with support from DBT and SRMIST. This platform has NGS, Sanger sequencer, RT-PCR, Digital PCR, Bioplex, Fluorescence Microscope with cryotom, Live animal imaging, MALDI-TOF-TOF mass spectrometer, nano-LC-MS and a CPSEA approved Specific Pathogen Free animal house.
Special laboratories for doing research with Zebra Fish (Danio rerio) and Drosophila are established with funding from DST and DBT.
In addition the School has many instruments like, GC, HPLC, UV-VIS spectrophotometers, IR spectrophotometer, GC-MS, particle size analyzer, etc. Other accessories like, Cell culture facilities, Bio-Safety Cabinets, Laminar Flow cabinets, aerobic and anaerobic champers, fermentors, PCR , gel-doc etc. are available in many laboratories. Annual budget for the School is around Rs.200 lakhs.
The School promotes national and international collaboration in academics and research. A unique Semester Abroad Programme introduced by SRMIST is effectively utilized by the students of School of Bio Engineering to enhance their research skills. Many of our UG and PG students are GATE qualified and they are selected at IITs for PG and Ph.D. programmes because of the effective training given to them at SRMIST.
