Coronavirus online scams: Beware of criminals

In tandem with the worldwide chaos caused by Covid-19, the virus is now wreaking havoc in the virtual world too, with scamsters using it as a bait for cyber crimes. E-mails— purportedly from renowned organisations or even from spoofing messages from SRMIST , SMS & WhatsApp messages and apps are being used to steal crucial information that attempt to trick you into clicking on malicious links or opening attachments.

These actions can reveal your user name and password, which can be used to steal money or sensitive information of hacking your social network.

How to spot Covid-19 related phishing email scams

  • E-Mail from any domain other than SRMIST.EDU.IN should be opened with caution.
  • If you are contacted by a person or organization that appears to be SRMIST, verify their authenticity before responding by checking the actual e-mail id from where it has been sent
  • FREE Courses , Seminars are being offered by almost every organization. Please be cautious to check the authenticity before filling up all sensitive details while registering yourself.

How to protect your data and device

  • Check sender's email address ,
  • Check the link before you click.
  • Be careful when providing personal information. Specifically bank accounts, cvv no etc.
  • Do not rush or feel under pressure, to fill up forms or provide any details.
  • Please do not install any unauthorised app based on some spam email.
  • Please do not download any unauthorised APP in your cell. Most of these fraud APPs come with exclusive features, they will be free & tempting.

If you have already provided any sensitive information to anyone, please don’t panic. immediately change your shared credentials.

If you are able to identify a scam, mark it as a SPAM in your SRMIST email , immediately.
