SRMAUV Team Wins National Championship at SAVe-2015

SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University)'s Autonomous Underwater Vehicle  team has bagged the national championship  at the Student's Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition (SAVe-2015) organized by the National Institute of Ocean Technology , under the Ministry of Earth Sciences , Government of India. This event was organized in association with IEEE OES and Ocean Society of India . The team will now be sponsored by the Government of India for AUVSI's International Robosub  competition this year to compete with premier universities worldwide like MIT, Cornell, ETS, University of Florida, Caltech ,National University of Singapore and others. It is a privilege for the team to represent India at an International event.

Team SRMAUV , lead by Akshay Raj Dayal, third year student of B.Tech Compuer Science Engineering, would like to extend gratitude to the Director E&T , Director Research and faculty advisor Mrs. Annapurani Panaiyappan for their continued support. Team cooperation was the key factor for the success of SRMAUV. The conceptual basis for Student Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (SAVe), is a highly mobile autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) based on engineering principles. Out of 27 teams registered 14 teams submitted their Preliminary Design Reports (PDR). These teams later submitted a detailed Conceptual Design Report and on the basis of oral presentation held at NIOT on 13th November 2014, 10 teams were short-listed.

With meticulous preparation, design and  integration of Mechanical, Electrical and Software systems for the final competition, the team was able to win over premier institutions in India like IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, NIT Rourkela, Delhi Technological University and others who were competing for the winning position.

The National Committee evaluated the students and expressed their sincere appreciation to all the teams involved in this Competition. The working AUVs were demonstrated for evaluation to the national committee on 24th January 2015 at the IIT Madras Swimming pool facility in Chennai. National Expert committee comprising of members drawn from various R&D and educational Institutions like DRDO and IEEE were involved in this selection process

Dr. M. A. Atmanand, Director NIOT explained about the initiative by NIOT in conducting this national event and its importance in creating awareness and interest among the young Engineers. Dr. R. Venkatesan, Scientist In Charge of this competition delivered the vote of thanks.

This is a major contribution by students to the field of Underwater Technology.
