Inspiring Minds

Mohan, final year student of Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering (EIE) has been a recipient of many acclaims and awards all through his college life. Mohan and Priyanka Choudhury, also a fellow student from EIE Department have got quite a good reason to stay happy, for they have participated and presented paper in SPIE Asia Student Conference held at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore.

The conference witnessed the participation of 54 teams which represented different countries. The team from SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) was the only Indian participants. All the papers were reviewed and out of 54, only 16 teams got the opportunity to present their papers. SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) students stood second and they received huge applause from the elite audience for it was only entry from the undergraduate students while all papers/projects were by the research scholars and post graduate students. The title of the paper presented was, 'Transmission Microscope Based Lensless Holography'. The paper recommends the use of optic fibre for studying samples instead of glass.

The team suggests that the optical fibre has got many qualities to its credit which could make a better alternative than glasses. Mohan said, "This field-portable dual-mode holographic microscope is cost effective and has a weight of ~200 g. It might especially be useful for field-use or for conducting microscopic analysis in resource-poor settings". This completely portable microscope is battery operated and the ultra zoom-in lens used also helps in the comparative study of the samples.

The experts in the field of optic fibre spoke during the first day of the event and on the second day, a session held on, how to present the paper which was then followed by the paper presentation by the select participants during the third day. The students thanked the Head of the Department, Dr. A. K. Jayanthy for giving them the opportunity to present their ideas on such a global platform. They also extended their thanks to the President, Vice chancellor, Director, Engineering and Technology and the Director of Students Affairs.
